Most of the files are gone from my attempted deletion, which appears to be the problem. Only one of the snapshots has the disks even listed looking at Settings. Come on guys, it is not ok to just delete snapshot files. It may have worked out in this instance, but the snapshot manager is not the final authority on whether or not a snapshot is currently in use.
If you have snapshots that are not showing up in Snapshot Manager but are in active use, you can try taking a snapshot of the VM and then deleting the snapshot, or running a disk consolidation. If those methods don't work you have a couple options, clone the VM if you have the space, or delete it and restore from backups. You can also perform a storage vMotion if you have the license. If the file in question does not now exist and didn't exist when you reverted the snapshot, then the file was removed BEFORE the snapshot was taken.
If the snapshot was taken before the file was deleted, then reverting back to that snapshot would "restore" the file. I get an error when attempting to delete the VM:. Virtual machine failed to generate VHD tree. Failed to lock virtual machine's configuration. I haven't tried the VM deletion in PowerShell, only the checkpoints. All of the files associated with this VM are gone except for some vmcx and vmrs files that appear to be related to the checkpoints.

I have another issue, same host where I can't connect to the VM console using the connection tool. I need to migrate a dozen or so VMs over to the other host before I can do this. I will update once I do. The state of the VM had also changed from Off-corrupted not sure about corrupted to Saved-whatever. To continue this discussion, please ask a new question. Get answers from your peers along with millions of IT pros who visit Spiceworks. But the VMRS files for guests keeps getting bigger. Dynamic or static memory does not effect the problem; you have to tax your storage with the amount of memory you provide to the guest.
The question is: is there a way to safely disable VMRS file for hyper v guests in Windows Server ; i do not want to allocate disk space for the memory i provide to the guest. I think you misinterpreted the answer provided by TheOnlyWizard, because the answer is 'yes'. Configure your VMs to not save state upon host shutdown.
That configuration will not allocate any disk space for memory provided to the guest. For 1. As I said, the space doesn't actually get taken up, unless you save the VM. So, to be able to keep a working VM in case something goes terribly wrong, you DO need to take that space being actually allocated into account from the start.
If that's not what you want, well, that's how Hyper-V does it's thing. You're only option then would be to look for a different Hypervisor which does things differently VMWare for example, although with that you get swapdisk-space to take into account You can set the clustered VM to shutdown instead of saving it, and you can NOT ever save the VM yourself but shut it down instead, and you can make sure to never use a "Quick migration" which would save the VM to prevent that space from ever getting allocated, but then still.
It will roughly show the size of the current Memory Demand, not the amount of memory set. So if your VM starts using less, say you stop all the DBs inside the VM, your memory demand drops, and so would the size of this file.
You can test that if you literally do that. Give the VM Gbytes of mem. Then, when you restore the VM, it will show to be Gbytes again all of a sudden But in reality on the storage, only 2 Gbytes is actually allocated so far Could be useful for read-heavy work loads.
Anyhow, if anyone from product team reads along please update the docs first, consider this option also. You could post feedback to the following site. Microsoft engineering teams would monitor the feedbacks and may improve the products. Please remember to mark the replies as answers if they help.
If you have feedback for TechNet Subscriber Support, contact tnmff microsoft. It is already an old thread, but since we are looking into the same question I am digging it up again. I think configuring the VM to not save state would not necessarily be "safely". In case of a database server for example there would be the risk of getting inconsistent databases when a server goes down unplanned.Experts Exchange always has the answer, or at the least points me in the correct direction! What's really going on below the surface? Sometimes it's something simple; other times it's a chain of complex steps that gives users a glimpse at the brilliance of the developers who make it work. Knowing which Hyper-V files and folders make up a VM, how to locate them and what functions they perform will give you a leg up to troubleshoot problems when they occur. Let's start with where Hyper-V files are located and how to navigate to them. VM files for clustered hosts reside in a different default location.
Even though you can separate VM files into different directories or volumes, they're usually stored in the same VM directory with subdirectories.
VMs live in these volumes, and all nodes of the cluster have access to them. These can be found in the following locations:. This location encapsulates VMs in an organized manner Figure A. I recommend using this location regardless of which method you use to create VMs. VHD files come in two varieties:. VHD and. VHD is the older version of Microsoft's virtual hard disk and has been around since the Virtual Server days. These files are VM hard drives and contain all individual files, OSes and so on.
Mount these files directly with Disk Management in Windows 7 and higher, or browse and change the content. Instead of backing up the entire VHD X file or traversing the whole file, the RCT file tracks changes and directs backup software only to blocks that have changed. Like RCT files, MRT files aid in tracking changes between backup operations, but they also provide resiliency in the event of a host crash, blue screen of death or even power failure.
MRT files ensure data doesn't go missing if something catastrophic happens to a host during a backup. Understanding what all segments of a Hyper-V installation do, how they work, where they're located and how to access them gives admins insight into performance problems and unresponsive VMs. In the Hyper-V world, this is equivalent to checking that you've plugged in the power cord. So, whether you check these Hyper-V files while logging in to the host or via a remote Universal Naming Convention path, dig deeper and add these points to your troubleshooting checklist.
